6 Reasons Why You Need A Second Shooter On Your Wedding Day
1. They help with the gear.
It is so much easier for a photographer to keep up with all their gear if they have a second shooter with them. It also insures nothing will be stolen or misplaced. No couple wants to hear their images were lost because they were in a bag that has gone missing. We keep all of our gear strapped to us, and anytime I need someone to hold a reflector to bounce light onto my subjects, my second shooter is there for me.
2. They can capture a different perspective.
While the lead photographer is directing and photographing the posed portraits, the second shooter has the advantage of capturing a photo journalistic point of view that wouldn't have happened if there were just the one photographer. Some of my clients's favorite photos were the candid shots that my second shooter snapped while they were unaware.
3. They are also a must during the getting ready process.
One photographer cannot be in two places at once. This is when second shooters are a big help. I have been upstairs shooting the bride while my second shooter was downstairs documenting the groom getting ready. What if the bride and groom are getting ready at two separate locations. Who gets left out? The bride or groom? Sad choice to make.
4. They are a must for a First Look before or during your ceremony.
One shooter captures the bride's face, while the other shooter can capture the groom's reaction simultaneously.
5. They are a time saver and a second pair of eyes.
While the lead photographer is busy photographing family formals or the lovely couple, the second shooter could be capturing all of the details in the reception area. A second shooter is also handy for photographing the car getting trashed while the other photographer is shooting the reception. No one realizes the second photographer is gone, and no important moments are missed.

Second shooters are a life saver if the main photographer's gear malfunctions. My flash didn't fire, or my lens froze while trying to focus. Uncle Henry jumped in front of me to get a shot with his cell phone while you had your big kiss and ruined my shot, but the second shooter got it... and that is the moment where every penny you spent hiring a second shooter was totally worth it!
